Removal of Garden Waste
Garden Waste
Recently, the UK government has been encouraging us all to reduce the amount of waste we accumulate and send to local landfill sites. Many of us have taken this to heart and most households now regularly recycle glass, plastic, paper and metal.
However, we have seen that despite this willingness to recycle, garden waste is often overlooked and put out together with other household waste. Some local councils provide special bins for eco-waste or ask for garden debris to be put out in green recycling bags; however, many councils do not do this and require you to take green waste to a local household waste recycling centre.
Many people do not even realise that it can be recycled if it is not collected along with paper, glass and plastic recycling.
Garden waste is often very rich in nutrients that make for excellent soil compost and should always be composted if possible. If you have a large amount of lawn mowings, hedge clippings, weeds or other green waste, don’t put it out with the rest of the rubbish! Get in touch with HGS Southern.
How Does Recycling Green Waste Benefit The Environment?
recycling green waste
Recycling green waste from site clearances help the environment. Not just by creating new products but by freeing up limited space at local landfills. Green waste being left in traditional rubbish disposal sites leads to higher amounts of methane (a harmful greenhouse gas) being released into the atmosphere.

FAQs
The term Green Waste refers to biodegradable, organic waste which is suitable for immediate composting. While it usually refers to the normal garden waste materials like leaves, plants and grass cuttings, it can also refer to compostable food items, such as discarded fruit and veg.
Green Waste does not, however, include large branches, straw, hay or dry leaves. These would fall under the category of ‘brown waste’ due to their significantly higher carbon content.
Small amounts of green waste can be placed in local green recycling bins. These are sometimes assigned per household and are sometimes communal bins shared by a street or a block of flats. You should always check with your local area’s recycling policy to ensure that they recycle green waste.
The clue is in the name. Almost any garden waste which is “green” and can fit into a single recycling bin can be placed in one. This includes grass, wet leaves and hedge trimmings but not “brown waste” such as dry leaves or soil.
If you have larger items like felled trees and long branches or a large enough amount of green waste that it will not fit in a standard recycling bin you should contact a dedicated green waste removal provider such as Harris Grab Services.
