What is Gravel?

What is Gravel?

Gravel refers to a collection of loose fragments of rocks. It is a construction aggregate formed by the natural erosion of larger rocks. It is then extracted from quarries known as gravel pits where it separated from sand using a gravel separator. Both sand and gravel are used in the production of concrete.

Gravel is used worldwide as a construction material but in Sussex we possess particularly rich deposits of gravel. Particles of gravel generally range in size from 2mm to 60mm and come in a variety of textures and colours. Gravel is often combined with pebbles to make a type of render referred to as pebbledash – this is often seen on the exterior of buildings.

Due to its surface and density, gravel is particularly resistant to water erosion. It has several landscaping applications, being commonly seen in driveways or used in place of grass for a low maintenance garden. It can also be mixed with asphalt for construction of roads.

FAQs

Gravel is one of the most widely used construction materials. It is commonly used in the construction of roads and driveways and can be combined with sand to create concrete.

Though similar, Gravel is created by the natural process of erosion and then gathered from a gravel pit. Crushed stone is created by the industrial crushing an existing larger stone such as limestone or granite.
